Public Talk: Building a Culture of Wellness: Can Comics Improve Our Health?

April 11, 2018, 1-2pm, 1121 Signe Skott Cooper Hall

In this talk, nurse, cartoonist, and co-founder of the new field of Graphic Medicine MK Czerwiec will discuss how comics can help improve our health by making education more engaging, by amplifying the voice of patients and families, and as a means by which we can explore our experiences with health, illness, disability, and caregiving.

Workshop: Reflective Drawing for Recovery, Resilience, and Care

April 11, 2018, 2:30-4pm, 1321 Signe Skott Cooper Hall

Participants in this workshop will make drawings and create comics that demonstrate the practice and potential role of graphic medicine in their professional and personal explorations of health, illness, disability, and caregiving. Through small and large group discussion, brainstorming, and questioning, participants will consider and adapt the methodologies and methods of graphic medicine to be most useful to their particular educational and care provision environments. Participants will also be provided follow-up resources and tools with which to dewomepen and develop their own practice and use graphic medicine methodologies in the future. Workshop is free but registration is required: comicnurse.eventbrite.com

Bio: MK Czerwiec (pronounced sir-wick) is the Artist-in-Residence at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine and a Senior Fellow of the George Washington School of Nursing Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement. She has a BA in English & Philosophy from Loyola University of Chicago, a BSN in nursing from Rush University, and an MA in Medical Humanities and Bioethics from Northwestern University. Her clinical nursing experience is in HIV/AIDS care and hospice care. MK has been making comics under the pseudonym Comic Nurse since 2000. With UK physician Ian Williams, she co-runs GraphicMedicine.org, a website devoted to the intersection of comics and health. Her first graphic memoir, Taking Turns: Stories from HIV/AIDS Care Unit 371 (Penn State University Press, 2017) is believed to be the first graphic memoir by a nurse. She is also a co-author of the Eisner Award nominated Graphic Medicine Manifesto (Penn State University Press, 2015), which maps the field of Graphic Medicine.

The events are cosponsored by the Applied Comics Kitchen, a Borghesi-Mellon Workshop, the UW-Madison School of Nursing and the Chazen Family Distinguished Chair.
